Just Take A Darn Risk!!

I have taken many risks in my life so far. Some were calculated and most were not, but I do not regret anything. I just know what I probably should not do again. When things go wrong from me taking my less than calculated risks, I usually hear one of my friends (the same one all of time) yelling, “Why in @#$& did you do that TDB???!!!” I sheepishly respond with a sigh and whine, “I dunno.”

Getting out of bed everyday to go brave the world is a risk in itself. I suggest you do what you are destined to do and be who you are destined to be. You only get one life…unless you know something that I don’t know. How many times are you going to say, “Man, I wish I would have done that”?

About 5 years ago, I left the US Postal Service, a job that I hated. It was a good paying job that offered a lot of security and great benefits, but it was killing me softly…physically and mentally. I was a divorced mom with three children, no degree, and no back-up plan whatsoever, but I still walked out of the door and never went back. I must have completely lost my mind. After about 3 months of enjoying my new found freedom, I realized that my vacation time would run out and so would my money. So, I went to paralegal school, got a part-time evening job as a security guard, and did bookkeeping for a small lawn service on the weekends. I loved it! Within 6 months, I had completed paralegal school (fast-tracked), I was hired by the Office of the City Attorney, and I passed my certification exams. Since then, I’ve moved up the corporate ladder and started my own business and there’s so much more I desire to do. I have yet to fulfill my purpose and I can’t wait to see/experience what’s in store for me.

You’ll never know unless you try. (By the way, I am in no way suggesting that any of you leave your jobs without a plan.)

“I really don’t think life is about the I-could-have-beens. Life is only about the I-tried-to-do. I don’t mind the failure but I can’t imagine that I’d forgive myself if I didn’t try.” – Nikki Giovanni

PS. I completely left Corporate America about 2 months after writing this blog. I was working for a major oil and gas corporation, had a nice office, and perks to die for, but I wasn’t willing to “die” for it. I will expound on this a little bit later. Although entrepreneurship has it’s ebbs and flows, you have to know when to catch your waves. – Tonya B.

This somewhat aligns with one of my favorite quotes

“You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don’t try.”

I was thinking the same thing about the Security Guard outfit. LOL. It just reiterates that “amazing things come in small packages”. Keep doing your “thang” girl!

I am suggesting people leave their jobs, by the way. :D
