“I’ve come to realize that I need true love.”

Friendship – The state of being in a good relation or attachment to a person; affection arising from mutual esteem and good will; amity.
Trust – reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person; confidence.
Honor – to hold in high respect; revere
Respect – esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality or ability
Admiration – a feeling of wonder, pleasure, or approval

If you add great communication then you have the foundations of a great relationship. At least one of these aspects was missing in all of my previous relationships. It was either something that I wasn’t receiving or something that I wasn’t giving. I’m not placing blame on anyone, but I learned that I can’t have either one of these without the other. I can’t be friends with someone I don’t trust; I can’t honor someone I don’t admire, and I can’t communicate with someone that I don’t respect.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about my past relationships and the patterns that appeared in all of them. I wonder if I purposely embarked on these painful relationships as a result of things that happened in my childhood. I often felt like I was the black sheep in the family and that there was nothing “special” about me. One thing that I noticed is that the men in my past relationships had overpowering egos…they were either obnoxiously arrogant or complete narcissist. Those were the only kind of men that I would attract. I think because of my childhood experiences, I felt I needed this type of man to cosign my existence.

I’m glad that I’ve found my own voice now. While in a relationship you should be supported, built up, and propelled to greater heights.
